Montecasino Bird Gardens

A great family outing is to the Bird Gardens located on the outskirts of the Montecasino complex. If you have a half or full day to spare in Johannesburg, then this is a must visit for the kids.

It is a hidden bird garden as I personally never expected to see an huge walk-through aviary in the concrete jungle of Johannesburg. What makes the gardens so beautiful is that it has the largest and most diverse private collection of South African Cycads in the world.

My 20 month old son loved the experience from the fantasy show to seeing his favourite meerkats and the over 60 species of birds. There is plenty to keep the kids fascinated.

Our favourite is definitely The Parrot Gallery being able to get up close makes for awesome photo moments with the Macaws and Cockatoos.

The Southern White Pelicans are gorgeous to look at and it is amazing how enormous these waterbirds are. At the entrance you can also purchase duck pellots to feed the ducks for an additional minimal charge. DSCF3946.jpg

There are also small wildlife from frogs, scorpions, Meerkats, Black Mambas through to Lemurs and a fierce Iguana.
